Madrid, Spain 2040

Madrid, Spain

Summer Olympics, 2040

In Spring 2025, I was assigned a project to design an Olympic Bid of a city of our choice in an upcoming year. The city I chose was Madrid, Spain, 2040, because of it’s vibrant history and lively scenery.

So, what is an Olympic Bid? It’s a formal proposal that a city or nation submits to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to host the Olympic Games. These bids are to show the committee that the city or nation has a comprehensive plan for the necessary infrastructure for hosting the Olympics.

An important aspect of this bid is the design. An Olympic Bid design needs to be versatile, iconic, and memorable. This design won’t necessarily be the final product, but simply an idea, to show the committee what the designers on the team have and what they’re capable of.

Ideation

Making a logo and visual system takes a LOT of ideation. From research to sketching, to more and more research, this bid took a lot of time to figure out.

In my research, I found a lot of inspiration for Madrid. A city of color, culture, dance and history.

Here, I have some of my early sketches, and then my more refined ones. I decided to go with the circled choice because it resembles a dancing person in a dress, kicking their foot high in the air. When I removed the grey shape inside the dress, I realized that the form looked kind of like an M.

M for Madrid!

Ultimately, I landed on this for the final logo:

And now, on to the application!

Mockups and Such

To make the logo seem much more authentic, I added both the logo and the stylistic elements to a series of mockups. I had to be careful, though, because apparently, the rules are very picky about how the Olympic Rings can be portrayed
